general guidelines for coursework

CLASS PREPARATION
Each course syllabus provides students with an overview of the topics that will be covered in the course. It is expected that students prepare themselves before they come to class. This includes, for example, reading of relevant chapters in textbooks before the class.

BASIC READING
General and basic scientific material can be found on the following website:
Ivy Without Walls

Students are expected to check out and are held responsible for knowing the chemical, physical, and biological information available on the following website:
Science @ a Distance: eLearning modules

EXAMINATIONS
General rules for taking exams:

  1. You should arrive early and bring at least one working #2 pencil with you.
  2. No student can begin the exam after the first student has finished the exam and left the room.
  3. Students that leave the room for any reason during the exam must first turn in their exam paper for grading!
  4. There are no make-up mid-term examinations in this course. If a student is absent from a scheduled exam for any reason and can supply correct and proper evidence (doctor's note, etc.), the student may be allowed to take a special, comprehensive final examination which will cover all the material required in the course.
  5. No questions will be answered during the exam.
  6. Read the questions carefully before attempting to answer them.

When: Mid-term examinations will be administered during regularly scheduled class hours (see your course/section).

Note: Final exams will only be given at the date and time set by the schedule of classes.

Exam contents:
The exams may consist of:

  1. Statements that students have to evaluate as correct or incorrect.
  2. Multiple choice questions.

What to Study: Material presented in lectures. There will be questions in the exams that refer to material only covered in the lectures.
Additionally, it is expected that students refer to textbooks for further reading. Examples for relevant textbooks are provided in the syllabus of each course.
Specifically, for the course Bio 34.1 it is expected that students know the content of the reader. Questions may cover material that is only given in the reader.

How to study: Students are expected to study on a regular basis. It is recommended to form study groups to help each other during the studies.

Students should begin to study early for midterm and final exams. It is recommended to review the material several times during the semester and not to begin studies a few days before the final exam.

Make use of the office hour to get questions answered.

Be present and pay attention during the review sessions!!!

Reviews: If possible, there will be reviews given during regular class hours before mid-terms as well as final exams.

Grading Policy: In general, any exam result below 60% will be considered as Grade "F". This policy is subject to change.

Exam results will not be curved. The actual score is subject to revisions as found necessary by the department or the instructor.
